Patience pays off

1 November 2013

Patience is a virtue says the old adage, which has certainly rung true for Dave Jones.

The Owls boss played the waiting game in a bid to bring Connor Wickham to Hillsborough for a second loan spell – and Jones got his man on Friday morning.

Wickham has signed for Wednesday until 1 January and will go straight into the squad that faces Reading in S6 on Saturday.

Jones said: “I said in my press conference yesterday that we made contact ten days ago about Connor and we’re very pleased he has chosen us.

“He’s had three of four clubs from the Championship wanting to take him and it just shows that what we did with him last time round, he appreciated.

“He obviously feels he can do a job for us here again.”

The benefits for Jones are twofold in that not only does Wickham’s introduction increase his striking options, the new recruit himself is already familiar with the Hillsborough surroundings.

He added: “When he came here last time, going out on loan was all new to him, he was a big-money buy for Sunderland so had a reputation to get through.

“He got through it pretty quick and we are hoping he does the same thing again.

“Connor gives us further options and the more strikers you have at your football club the better.”
