Students give Coke a grilling!

20 November 2013

Sport journalism students from Sheffield Hallam University gained important experience in their field yesterday when interviewing Owls midfielder Giles Coke.

The budding journalists were given the opportunity to put their questions to Giles in a pre-match press conference style environment, to get their stories ahead Saturday’s Yorkshire derby against Huddersfield.

No stone was left unturned and no topic was left untouched as Coke answered all the questions in this press conference with a twist!

As part of the student’s curriculum at SHU, it is an important part of the course to gain experience of this nature.

SWFC Director of Communications Trevor Braithwait said: “We are proud as a club to have excellent relationships with both Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield.

“For journalists looking to make their way in this industry, it is important for them to experience situations such as these.

“The students made the most of this opportunity and certainly didn’t give Giles an easy ride!”

Coke added: “There were some really good questions that I had to think about!

“It’s important as a player to give something back to the community in any way possible. These guys are finding their feet in their chosen professions and I was more than happy to help them.

“The media is so important in football and I have to say, it was probably one of the toughest press conferences I have experienced, so well done to them all!”
