Wickham signs

1 November 2013

Sheffield Wednesday have signed Premiership striker Connor Wickham on a youth loan.

The Sunderland forward has agreed a deal in S6 that runs until the New Year.

Wickham enters into his second spell at Hillsborough having enjoyed a successful loan with Wednesday last season that culminated in a decisive goal at Leicester that secured the Owls three crucial points.

The talented 20-year-old rose through the ranks with Ipswich Town and joined Sunderland for a reported £8m in the summer of 2011, when he was also named as the Football League Young Player of the Year.

Wickham graduated to the international stage with England and earned caps at Under-16, Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 level.

His inclusion in the Under-17 European Championship in 2010 was key as the Colchester product scored the winning goal in the final against Spain.

Wickham will wear shirt number 29 for the duration of his Owls stay and is eligible to play when Wednesday entertain Reading in the Sky Bet Championship on Saturday.

He told swfc.co.uk: “I’m really pleased to come back to Sheffield Wednesday.

“There was interest from other clubs but I feel I have unfinished business here and I can’t wait to get started again.

“I know the manager, I know the players and the place and that was a big influence in my decision.”
