Hard to swallow

21 September 2013

Dave Jones reflected on the Owls’ 4-1 defeat at Birmingham and said the manner of the defeat left a bitter taste.

Wednesday were put to the sword primarily by new Blues loan recruit Jesse Lingard, who fired all four goals as the Midlanders romped to their first home win of the season.

And Jones said the whole visiting camp must take responsibility for the comprehensive reverse:

“We are all in this together and we should all apologise for that performance, which was poor.

“It’s particularly hard to swallow because the training has been so good all week but we’ve gone there and left it behind.

“If you lose the first goal, you prevent a second but we didn’t do that and we kept giving the ball away.

“The lad Lingard has had a great debut but we made it easy for him.

“We’ve let ourselves down today and we have to put that right next week at home.”

Whilst hugely disappointed with the reverse in the second city, Jones had nothing but praise for the travelling hoards from Sheffield, who were vocal throughout what was a dismal performance from their side.

He added: “They were fantastic once again and I feel for every single one of them.

“They have paid their money, they have travelled again to see us and in their thousands. We have let them down.

“As I say, everyone should be apologising to our supporters today because they have come here in their thousands, they have kept going but we didn’t.”
