Instant attraction

Stephen McPhail has said he was eager to get the green light on beginning his Owls career and is now keen to get down to business.

The ex-Cardiff midfielder had been in training with the club for a number of weeks before making his switch to Wednesday official and is delighted to be a part of the squad.

For McPhail, the attraction to the club was instant and now the Republic of Ireland international is aiming to help the Owls kick on up the league table.

He told swfc.co.uk: “For me, I couldn’t wait to get going.

“I’d been training with the squad for a few weeks and I knew I wanted to sign as soon as I walked through the gates.

“There is a good atmosphere here, the lads are working hard for each other and are desperate to get that first win.

“As soon as I came into contact with the manager and we had our discussions, I just wanted to get the green light to sign my contract and give this club my all.

“I worked with Dave at Cardiff for many successful years, he knows how I work and that I will give everything I’ve got.”

McPhail now has his sights set on Saturday’s local derby with Doncaster and making his maiden appearance for the club on home turf.

McPhail, who also had a two-year spell with Barnsley, revealed he has always enjoyed the surroundings and atmosphere that go with games at Hillsborough.

He added: “I can’t wait to get out there on Saturday. I’ve played many times down the years at Hillsborough as a visitor. The fans are so vocal, the atmosphere is fantastic and it’s a superb stadium.

“It will be a tough challenge but we need to get a couple of wins under our belt. I’m positive the results will come and we can start looking up the table.”
