Kids get active with SWFC

26 September 2013

Pupils at a South Yorkshire school have been getting active with Sheffield Wednesday as part of a new sports scheme.

The project sees SWFC Community coaches delivering regular physical education classes at The Willows School in Thurcroft, Rotherham, which caters for pupils with a range of learning difficulties.

Lessons will be loosely based around football but also contain elements to improve balance, coordination and general fitness.

Assistant Head Teacher at the school, Darren Atkinson, is extremely pleased with how popular the PE sessions are proving to be amongst students.

“We are always looking at ways to encourage our pupils to enjoy sport so we decided to bring in SWFC to help deliver our PE curriculum,” he said.

"Working with the SWFC coaches has been brilliant; all the pupils are really enjoying the PE lessons and we have also been oversubscribed for the after school club.”

At the launch event for the joint project the kids were given a special treat when Community Programme mascot Ollie Owl turned up to join in.

Mr Atkinson added: "Some of the children might have chased Ollie all around the school but they can’t wait for him to come back and visit us again soon.”
