  • Owls Development Squad kick off new season
  • Lee Bullen's side edge out Crystal Palace 2-1
  • Rhys McCabe and Manny Dieseruvwe on target

The Owls’ Under-21s kicked off their new campaign with a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace at Middlewood Road.

Rhys McCabe opened the scoring with a well-placed free kick a minute before the interval to give Wednesday the perfect boost going into half time.

McCabe was instrumental in the second goal too, sending a low corner to the front post from which Manny Dieseruvwe profited to double the lead.

Palace halved the deficit on 65 minutes when right back Mandela Egbo powered forward to blast an unstoppable shot past Joe Wildsmith.

Franck Betra almost extended the advantage five minutes from time but skimmed wide from close range while at the other end, Wildsmith ensured the points stayed in S6 with a point blank save to deny Andre Coker.

Owls: Wildsmith, Young, Floro, De Haviland, Sanders (Beatson 74), Corry, Croasdale, Hanna, Dieseruvwe, McCabe (Betra 81), Sousa (Stobbs 71)
