Owls goalkeeper Keiren Westwood has been named in Martin O’Neill’s provisional 36-man Republic of Ireland squad.

The Irish are set to face Oman on 3 September in Dublin before the squad will be whittled down for the Euro 2016 qualifying clash with Georgia in Tbilisi.

Westwood has hit the ground running at Hillsborough and has featured in the Owls’ opening three Championship fixtures, keeping two clean sheets against Brighton and Derby.

Owls head coach Stuart Gray said: “Keiren has been called up to the Republic squad so obviously we are doing something right.

“It’s good news for him and good news for Sheffield Wednesday.

“Leaving Sunderland to come here has allowed Keiren to get back in goal and show what he can do.

“Martin O’Neill was at the game on Tuesday watching the two keepers he has named in his squad and we’re really pleased for him.

“The challenge is to stay in there now so he has got to play well.”
