REPORT: Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 Notts County

12 August 2014

  • Owls advance in Capital One Cup
  • Wednesday post comfortable 3-0 win over Notts County
  • Goals from Maghoma, Madine and Nuhiu

Wednesday cruised into the second round of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday evening with a comfortable 3-0 win over Notts County.

From the first whistle the Owls controlled the tie and went ahead through an early Jacques Maghoma strike.

Gary Madine capped a great opening to the contest and added a second on ten minutes before Atdhe Nuhiu made certain of Wednesday’s passage in the competition, scoring his first goal of the season after the break.

On paper the Owls were favourites to make it two wins from two in 2014/15 and advance in the Capital One Cup.

And right from the off Wednesday asserted their authority on the game and made a golden start thanks to a wonderful strike from Maghoma.

Nuhiu controlled in the 18-yard box and picked out Maghoma, who cut inside his marker and rifled a crisp strike that whistled past Roy Carroll.

Wednesday continued on the front foot and almost doubled their advantage minutes later – albeit with a stroke of fortune - as Joe Mattock’s deep cross clipped Carroll’s crossbar.

As the Owls continued to press and ask the questions, Notts County had no answers and fell further behind in an explosive opening ten minutes.

Chris Maguire delivered perfectly for Madine and the striker guided the ball into the net with a cushioned finish from six yards.

County were in danger of letting the tie slip away in the opening half hour as Nuhiu saw a trio of headers flash agonisingly wide.

The visitors’ first chance came just past the half hour mark when Liam Noble drilled inches wide from 20 yards with Chris Kirkland at full stretch.

At 2-0, Notts County were still in the game and in a bid to haul themselves back into the contest, Shaun Derry made a triple change but to no avail.

Mattock’s low delivery found its way to Nuhiu who thrashed over the top with the visitors fortunate not to concede for a third time.

There was a rare scare for Wednesday as Adam Dawson’s centre was deflected on target by Liam Palmer, but Kirkland was on top of the situation to keep his clean sheet intact.

And the game was effectively put to bed 63 minutes in when Nuhiu stooped low to nod home from Mattock’s cross, leaving no route back into the match for the Magpies and a comfortable pass to the second round for Stuart Gray's men.

Owls: Kirkland, Palmer, Loovens (Zayatte 68), Lees, Mattock, Maghoma (Corry 82), Semedo, Coke (McCabe 74), Maguire, Nuhiu, Madine

Notts County: Carroll, Adams, Smith (Jones 46), Mullins, Hollis, Wroe (Dawson 46), Murray, Cassidy, Thompson, Noble, Whitehouse (Balmy 46)
