Wednesday set the standard

  • Giles Coke scored winning goal at Brighton on opening day
  • Owls midfielder hungry for more
  • Coke praises superb supporter backingat The Amex

With his first goal of the season under the belt and ditto the Owls’ first victory, Giles Coke is hopeful of more of the same moving forward.

Coke’s delicious effort at The Amex Stadium on Saturday was enough to get Wednesday off to a winning start on the South Coast.

And the midfield man says that he and his team mates have now set the standard for 2014/15:

“I thought we did really well, we had our game plan and stuck to it.

“The more the game went on, the more we were in control and I’m delighted for everyone – the lads, the gaffer and the staff, and the fans, who were incredible yesterday.

“To take more than 2,500 all that way is just incredible and shows you how big this football club is and can be.

“I’m proud to have scored the goal for them and now I’ve got one, I want more.

“The gaffer says I won’t score many goals playing deep so I am trying to become more involved in the final third.

“It worked for me yesterday and I thought we fully deserved the win.

“But now we have set that standard, we have to keep it.”

Reflecting on his looping strike that ensured a travelling triumph for the Owls, Coke says he could hardly contain his joy – hence the energetic dash from one end of the field to the other to celebrate in front of the joyous Wednesdayites.

He smiled: “It’s a special feeling and you can’t really put it into words.

“The adrenalin just takes over and I was off! I know what this club means to the fans and I just felt the urge to go right up to them and show what it means to me.

“I know I have more goals in me and I can’t wait for the next one.”
