Owls handed Joe Mattock boost

3 December 2014

  • Joe Mattock ahead of schedule
  • Defender has been sidelined with ankle injury
  • Head coach says 24-year-old could feature at Blackburn

Wednesday defender Joe Mattock could make his return from injury this weekend at Ewood Park.

The 24-year-old picked up an ankle injury last month during the Owls’ clash with Charlton at The Valley.

Scan results confirmed the stopper would be ruled out for around six weeks but head coach Stuart Gray is pleased to report good news on that front and said:

“Joe is ahead of schedule and will be available for selection for Saturday. He has been excellent for us this season."

Mattock now faces strong competition for a place in the starting eleven.

Jeremy Helan has come in at left back and came third in the swfc.co.uk November Player of the Month vote.

Gray added: “We lost Joe but Jeremy has come in at left back and done well.

“It gives me a nice selection dilemma having Joe back.

“Jeremy has got the shirt and it’s up to him to keep it. It’s all about competition for places and Joe will be wanting to get back into the team.

“It is better for the squad in general the more players I’ve got to choose from.”
