Yesterdays: The first Steel City derby

15 December 2014

Many, many memorable matches – for a raft of reasons – have since unfolded between the two, but it was as long ago as 1890 on this day when Wednesday and United first locked horns.

The venue was Olive Grove in Sheffield and the attendance is recorded at 10,000 for the maiden Steel City derby.

The Owls ran out 2-1 winners, with goals from Harry Woolhouse and Harry Winterbottom deciding the friendly clash.
