A huge lift

3 February 2014

Chris Maguire has described his match-winning moment on Saturday as a huge lift for everyone associated with Sheffield Wednesday.

Deep into added time Maguire came up with the goods to fire Wednesday into a 1-0 lead with no time left for Barnsley to respond.

The goal was the Scot’s fifth in eight games and the in-form striker said:

“It’s a great feeling to score right at the end. With the way the game was going, it looked as though it would be a draw so it’s a huge lift for everybody.

“You look at the scoreboard and know time is running out but I think they tired going down to nine men and it gave us the opportunity to get the ball at the edge of their box.

“As semedo gave it to me there was only one thing that was on my mind and that was to get the strike away and thankfully it went in.”

The win has lifted the Owls to 17th in the Championship – now six points from danger – with the victory over the Reds seeing Wednesday’s unbeaten run stretch to ten games.

Maguire added: “I’m pleased for myself because it’s another goal but more importantly I’m pleased for the team because it has given us a huge lift in the league.

“At the moment I’m really enjoying my football.

“A lot of that is down to Stuart. He’s got the job and given me a chance. I worked with him at Portsmouth and he knows what I can do and I’m really grateful to him.

“I’m playing full of confidence and a lot of it is down to him.”
