Fond farewell

13 February 2014

Stephen McPhail has agreed a deal to join Ireland Premier League outfit Shamrock Rovers.

The midfielder’s contract with the Owls ends towards the end of February, after which he will commence his Rovers career.

McPhail has agreed a one-year deal with the option of an extension at the end of the new Irish campaign that begins in early March.

The 34-year-old, who trained with the Owls last summer before signing two short term contracts at Hillsborough, made 14 appearances for the club.

He told swfc.co.uk: “I’ve really enjoyed my time with Sheffield Wednesday, it’s a fantastic club and it was a pleasure to play for them.

“I’ve only been here for a few months but I really felt part of the place and I wish everyone at the club nothing but the best.

“Stuart Gray has been great with me and everyone can see the impact he has made.

“He has everyone onside and the players have responded to the way he works.

“He is certainly the man to take the club forward in my opinion.”

Although sad to depart S6, McPhail is relishing the prospect of being reunited with his family on an everyday basis in his homeland.

He added: “It’s been hard being away from the family and not seeing them every day.

“That was a massive influence in this move, and Shamrock Rovers have some excellent young players. Hopefully I can pass on my experience to those lads for the benefit of the club.”
