Owls draw with Derby

24 February 2014

Ten-man Sheffield Wednesday Under-18s played out a 1-1 draw against Derby County at Middlewood Road last weekend.

The Owls started the match the stronger of the two sides and quickly stamped their authority on the game stringing together a number of chances.

The deadlock was finally broken midway through the first half when Offrande Zanzala capitalised on a defensive mix up and fired Derby County in front.

The front three of Franck Betra, Jack Stobbs and Charlie Dawes were causing the Derby defence problem as they looked to grab an equaliser before the break.

And the hosts didn’t leave it long before the levelled.

Five minutes before the interval, following a period of heavy pressure, Jack Taylor's shot from 25-yards-out took a slight deflection as it flew into the top corner past Erik Behrens.

The Rams sought a quick response after the resumption and began the stronger of the two teams, controlling the early possession.

But chances were few and far between in a close-fought second period with very little to trouble either goalkeeper.

With ten minutes to go, Wednesday skipper Simon Hanna was shown a straight red card for a professional foul, but Wednesday held on to post a point despite the Rams’ numerical advantage.
