Afobe ready

30 January 2014

Owls loan striker Benik Afobe is excited over his switch to Wednesday having agreed a loan deal from Arsenal until the end of the season.

Afobe, a product of the Gunner’s academy, is in line to make his debut on Saturday as the Owls face rivals Barnsley in S6.

Speaking to the media on Thursday at Middlewood Road, Afobe said:

“This is the right step for me to come here and get first team football and hopefully I can score a few goals and help this club climb the table.

“I spoke to Damian Martinez and Connor Wickham, who are good friends of mine, and they only had good things to say about this club, as has everyone I have spoken to.

“I’m really looking forward to it.”

The 20-year-old joins the Owls just three days after scoring the winning goal in the Under-21 Premier League Cup against Chelsea and is now keen to bring his good form into the Championship with Wednesday.

Drawing 0-0 with Chelsea after 90 minutes, Afobe scored the winning goal in extra time and believes he is ready for this opportunity in the Championship.

He added: “After the Under-21 game between Chelsea and Arsenal, I got a phone call to say Sheffield Wednesday were interested to take me on loan.

“I know Sheffield Wednesday are on a nine-game unbeaten run and I want to come here and help that continue.

“I’m not cup-tied, I haven’t played in the FA Cup for Arsenal so hopefully I can help Wednesday continue their run on that front too.

“Obviosuly being at Arsenal, I’m training with world class players and usually in the Premier League those players, and the other top teams, generally win their games every week.

“But in the Championship it doesn’t seem to work like that, any side is capable of winning on their day and that’s what makes it exciting.”
