The SWFC Development Squad lost their Central League Cup-tie on Tuesday afternoon at Scunthorpe.
Wednesday had led 1-0 at the break courtesy of a Rhys McCabe strike but the Iron hit back after half time to win 4-1.
The Owls took the lead 20 minutes into the contest as McCabe curled the ball into the bottom corner from just outside the area.
The Scot almost doubled the Owls’ advantage in the closing minutes of the first half but the midfielder’s free kick flew inches wide of the target.
Ten minutes after the restart, Scunthorpe levelled through Chris Iwelumo before trialist Gary McSheffrey made it 2-1 from the penalty spot, after going down under a challenge from Rafa Floro.
McShreffrey hit a fierce strike from 25 yards to give the Iron a 3-1 lead and completed his hat trick five minutes from time with a neat finish inside the area.
