Gray delighted with Lees capture

31 July 2014

  • Tom Lees signed for the Owls on Thursday
  • Central defender penned three-year deal
  • 'Fantastic player' says head coach

Stuart Gray has spoken of his delight having secured the services of defender Tom Lees on a three-year contract.

The 23-year-old joined the Owls on Thursday morning for an undisclosed fee from Yorkshire rivals Leeds and Gray revealed he has monitored Lees for some time.

He said: “I’ve been taking a look at him since the back end of last season.

“He was recommended to me by our youth coach Neil Thompson.

“Tom is a good age at 23 and has played a lot of senior games.

“We are getting a fantastic player so I am really pleased the boy has passed his medical and the deal is done."

Together with his aerial ability, Lees has a reputation as a defender composed with the ball at his feet, which is a particular trait that appealed to Wednesday’s head coach.

He added: “He is a ball-playing centre back and I want to play out from the back.

“He doesn’t panic on the ball and has a good reading of the game as well.

“Ton is an honest player who has many years in front of him.”
