Maguire sets his goals

4 July 2014

Chris Maguire is throwing himself into the Owls’ pre-season programme with the aim to be as fit as possible and to challenge for a place in the starting XI at Brighton.

Plenty of work remains to be done on the training ground and in a host of friendly games before that key fixture on August 9.

But with a strong pre-season campaign under the belt, combined with a productive 13/14 term behind him, Maguire’s main goal is to ensure his involvement at Brighton on day one.

He told Wednesday Player: “You want to go out there and kick on from where you left off, obviously there will be changes but you’d like to think you’ve shown enough to get back in.

“Not only that, but you have to do well in pre-season but hopefully I can be in that starting line-up come the start of the season.

“I managed to finish as the club’s top scorer last season and I was delighted with that but if I get a full season, I’m sure I can score more goals.

“It’s a different scenario for me coming back this year because last season I got a chance to play in the team, so I’m looking forward to it and I can’t wait for the season to start.”

And on the pre-season front, Maguire believes the squad have made a solid start at Middlewood Road and added:

“There’s been a lot of running as you would expect in pre-season, a lot of heavy legs in the first week and soreness but it’s good to get back and get started.

“It’s all part and parcel of football, you need to get your head focused on what you have to do and the boys are feeling good.

“Every player wants to go into the season feeling as on top of their game as they can be and this is the only way to do that.”
