Owls coach Lee Bullen has hailed the arrival of defensive duo Matt Young and Ed Sanders.
The promising youngsters have signed one-year deals at Hillsborough and Bullen believes both have the capabilities to make their mark with Wednesday.
Plenty of work is still to be undertaken over the summer months to bring the right players into the club’s Under-21 set-up but Bullen is pleased by the early progress.
He told swfc.co.uk: “Matt came into the club last season and did well. He caught the eye of our academy staff and the manager.
“His character also impressed the staff and that is as important as ability because we want to bring players in with the right attitude.
“We had highlighted the right back position as an area we needed additional cover for. Matt comes from a good background and at 20 years old, he has that bit of experience playing at this level.”
With regard to 18-year-old Stoke academy product Ed Sanders, Bullen continued:
“Ed was flagged up by our scouting network. When we allowed the likes of Taylor McKenzie and Johnny Fenwick to leave the club, we wanted to bring in a young centre back to fill that void.
“Ed came highly recommended and was watched by Ken Ryder, who was particularly impressed with his attitude and vocal skills.
“We feel he is the type of player we want at Sheffield Wednesday.
“This year will be a big test for him as he trains with the first team and while he’ll show them respect, we’ll expect him to progress.
“He’s grounded and shows good leadership qualities and hopefully we will see them both players develop with us over the coming season.”
