A late Jordi Gomez penalty saw Wigan emerge 1-0 winners over the Owls on Wednesday evening at the DW Stadium.
It was a cruel blow for Wednesday, who had more than matched the in-form Latics, but the Spaniard made no mistake from the spot to continue Wigan’s outstanding run in all competitions.
Wednesday had earlier been denied from the penalty spot with Ali Al Habsi making a good stop to thwart Leon Best in the first half.
The home side made a lively start to proceedings as strike duo Nicky Maynard and Martyn Waghorn saw early chances go begging.
Maynard was proving a handful and was alert to nick possession in Wednesday territory before Glenn Loovens made a key last ditch challenge to stub out the danger.
The talking point of the first period came just after the half hour mark when the Owls were awarded a penalty.
Best fed for Jacques Maghoma who took possession in the area before going down under a challenge from Al Habsi.
The referee pointed to the spot and the Latics keeper was fortunate not to receive a straight red card before immediately making amends by denying Best from the spot.
That moment stirred the home side and Wigan came straight back at Wednesday with Ryan Tunnicliffe fired a stinging shot on target, forcing Damian Martinez to divert behind for a corner.
Wednesday, though, came out after the half time interval with more purpose and put the Latics on the backfoot.
After industrious work from Giles Coke, the midfielder worked space down the left to deliver a teasing ball that was just too high for the unmarked Best in the middle.
James McClean gave the Owls a scare ten minutes after the restart, darting into the area down the left but Martinez made a vital stop from the former Sunderland man.
As the clock began to tick down, Wigan began to enjoy the lion’s share of possession but without finding a way through, with Wednesday defending resiliently.
That was until the home side worked their best chance of the contest with ten minutes left to play.
Callum McManaman received the ball inside the 18-yard box, in acres of space but dragged wide of the target before Liam Palmer struck the side netting moments later for Wednesday.
But despite the Owls’ solid display over the Pennines, Wigan delivered a killer blow two minutes from time from the penalty spot.
Following a tangle between Caolan Lavery and James Perch in the area, the referee awarded a spot kick and Gomez obliged from 12 yards to seal a seventh successive win for the Latics.
