Under-18s march on

15 March 2014

The Owls’ Under-18s extended their unbeaten run to five games on Saturday morning as they emerged 2-1 winners from Crewe Alexandra.

Goals from Franck Betra and Jake Ellam did the damage and although the hosts pulled one back after the break, the Owls held firm to take the points.

Wednesday took the lead on 12 minutes when Betra applied the final touch to a well-worked move involving four players, and most notably a clever contribution from Charlie Dawes.

A fiercely struck goal from Ellam midway through the opening period put the Owls in the driving seat.

Crewe halved the deficit just after the restart but a stern defensive display ensured victory for the visitors – and a third straight win on the road.

Coach Steve Haslam said: "It was very pleasing to see the winning mentality amongst the group continue and secure the three points.

“In windy conditions and on an uneven surface it was a little tricky to get the ball down and play but we managed the game well and scored two excellent goals.

“Josh Stachini, as an Under-16, deserves credit for his performance against Crewe's most threatening player and Joe Wildsmith gave an accomplished performance in goal."
