Wednesday lose out

24 March 2014

The Sheffield Wednesday Development Squad suffered a 4-0 reverse to local rivals Sheffield United at Shirecliffe last week.

The Owls conceded an early goal when Blades forward Diego De Girolamo teed up his strike partner Dominic Calvert-Lewin to apply a neat finish into the bottom right hand corner.

Jack Stobbs and Seanan Foster were combining well down the right and provided an outlet for Wednesday on the wings.

But as the visitors searched for the leveller, United doubled their lead.

De Girolamo was proving a handful and the Italian Under-19 fed CJ Hamilton, whose low cross was turned in by Otis Khan to make it 2-0.

Wednesday were then left with a mountain to climb when Khan added his second of the game moments later after 22 minutes. There was an element of fortune attached to the goal as the midfielder’s cross took a wicked deflection which looped over Adam Davies and in off the post.

Rafael Floro’s low free kick brought a good stop from George Willis on the stroke of half time but the Blades made sure of the points when Hamilton’s accurate ball picked out Calvert-Lewin, who improvised well to flick the ball into the net.

The Owls then had a flurry of chances and were unfortunate not to register a consolation goal in the latter stages.

Gary Madine forced Willis into making a good reaction stop from a header and Johnny Fenwick saw his effort cleared off the line. Charlie Dawes fizzed a powerful strike on target in the dying minutes but Willis was down quick at his near post to make the save and preserve United’s clean sheet.
