On this Day: Owls triumph in the play-off final

29 May 2014

It’s nine years to the day since the Owls triumphed over Hartlepool at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium in the League One play-off final.

On 29 May 2005, over 40,000 Wednesdayites made their way to the Welsh capital to roar the Owls on to victory with a place in the Championship at stake.

Jon-Paul McGovern gave Paul Sturrock’s side the lead on the stroke of half time but Pools turned the game on its head after the restart with Eifon Williams and Jon Daly putting Hartlepool ahead.

As the game entered its final stages, the Owls hauled themselves back in the tie as Steve MacLean slammed home his 20th goal of the season from the spot, a result of Chris Westwood’s challenge on Drew Talbot that earned the defender a red card.

Into extra time the game went where Glenn Whelan steadied the nerves with a stunning strike to regain the Owls’ advantage and Wednesday made sure of promotion in the last minute.

Talbot won possession on the halfway line before motoring upfield, rounding Dimi Konstantopoulos and tapping home into the empty net to seal elevation to the second tier.
