The Sheffield Wednesday Under-21s were narrowly defeated by the odd goal in three at Middlewood Road on Monday lunchtime.
Noel Hunt gave Leeds a first half lead but Wednesday hit back through Mani Dieseruvwe from the spot.
And as the Owls pressed to win the game, against the run of play, Leeds regained their one-goal lead through Frank Mulhern five minutes from time.
The Owls started well as Dieseruvwe pulled back for Paul Corry, who hit over the bar inside the opening moments.
Four minutes before the interval, experienced striker Hunt drilled his shot through a crowded area and into the net to give the visitors a lead at the break.
Simon Hanna came within inches of equalising when his curling strike smashed against the crossbar before Rafa Floro made a goalline clearance following a goalmouth scramble.
Northern Ireland youth international Hanna was then fouled in the area and Dieseruvwe calmly converted from 12 yards but against the run of play, Leeds edged back in front.
Frank Mulhern finished low past Joe Wildsmith and Dieseruvwe almost levelled at the last but saw his goal-bound header saved by Leeds keeper Eric Grimes.
