11 November 2014

  • Burnley edge Under-21 clash 1-0
  • Ashley Barnes on target for the visitors
  • Owls youngsters impress against senior opposition

The Under-21s went down to a first half Ashley Barnes strike at Middlewood Road, as Burnley ran out 1-0 winners.

The Premier League outfit fielded a strong side for the friendly encounter and senior striker Marvin Sordell almost put the Clarets ahead on 12 minutes, but nodded inches wide from Ross Wallace’s cross.

The visitors, though, went ahead four minutes later through Barnes, who volleyed home from another Wallace delivery.

Sordell went close on two occasions before the break, seeing his deflected shot go behind for a corner and forcing young shot stopper Brad McDonagh into making a good stop.

Burnley goalkeeper Conor Mitchell made a fine save to deny Mani Dieseruvwe on the stroke of half time.

After the break, the young Wednesday side gave as good as they got against experienced opposition and Rhys McCabe tested Mitchell from 20 yards with a dipping free kick.

Barnes went close again in the late stages, flashing two quick fire shots just wide before the referee called time on a good workout for the Owls youngsters.
