Wednesday posted another clean sheet and a point from a low key derby affair with Huddersfield on Saturday.
Stevie May hit the bar and upright with the same shot in the second half and that pretty much summed up the Owls’ ill fortune in the final third.
Wednesday began the game well enough and earned a corner just seconds in before going on to edge the early exchanges of what proved a lacklustre first half.
May cut across the Terriers’ backline on the 15-minute mark but had his low drive blocked, moments after Gary Taylor-Fletcher went close with a shot on the turn.
But Huddersfield grew into the game and created the best opportunity of the opening period on 28 minutes when Tommy Smith’s feed into the box was taken off the toes of the on-rushing Sean Scannell by Tom Lees.
The match certainly needed a spark after the break and May almost provided it, coming within a whisker of setting up Taylor-Fletcher a minute into the second half.
The Terriers responded with ex-Owl Grant Holt heading over the crossbar from six yards and went closer still when dangerman Scannell broke free on goal but narrowly missed the target.
Play soon reverted to the other end as Royston Drenthe forced Joe Murphy into a save having danced clear of three challenges before pulling the trigger.
Huddersfield made a double substitution on 67 minutes, one of whom almost made an instant impression.
The ball fell kindly to Nahki Wells and the hosts’ record signing hit low and hard across Keiren Westwood, who was down smartly to parry clear of goal.
With 15 minutes to go, Wednesday came so close to breaking the deadlock when May hit a piledriver on the angle ten yards out only to see the ball cannon first off the crossbar and then the post before Huddersfield cleared.
Then the game had a dramatic ending, with two talking points inside a minute. First Wells beat the offside trap and advanced one on one with Westwood but the in-form keeper came out on top.
Moments later, substitute Maguire went down in the box but as the Owls appealed for a penalty, the referee gave only a yellow card to the Scot for simulation.
Still there was time for one more chance right at the last when Drenthe sent in a curling drive that Murphy saved at full stretch to ensure a share of the spoils.
