Yesterdays: The Wigan washout

27 November 2014

Almost one year ago in December 2013, Wednesday and Wigan met at Hillsborough for their second ever competitive clash in S6.

But the game did not make it to the hour mark as referee Keith Stroud abandoned the match on 59 minutes.

The waterlogged pitch became unplayable after heavy rainfall had caused severe disruption to the Sky Bet Championship clash early in the second period.

The visitors had led 1-0 through midfielder James McClean’s 24th minute strike but the persistent rainfall, which worsened after the break, left the officials with only one option.

Following the decision to abandon, Owls head coach Stuart Gray said: “It was the right decision, without a doubt. You have to think of the players and you can’t risk anything happening because of the weather.

“It was absolutely torrential and that was just standing on the sidelines.”
