Gray hails keeper competition

8 October 2014

  • Owls can call on two quality goalkeepers
  • Westwood and Kirkland battle for contention
  • Competition healthy says head coach

Stuart Gray has hailed the competition between the sticks at Hillsborough this season.

The Owls’ head coach boosted the goalkeeping department over the summer with the signing of Keiren Westwood before extending Chris Kirkland’s S6 stay.

Gray is now reaping the benefits and believes he has two of the best custodians in the Championship.

He told swfc.co.uk: “They are right up there, without a shadow of a doubt.

“In Keiren and Chris, we have two vastly experienced goalkeepers and I think everyone can see the benefits of that.

“Ideally, I want strong competition for every position and I have that with the goalkeepers.”

Westwood currently has the gloves but Kirkland is breathing down his neck on a daily basis.

And Gray believes that situation is exactly how it should be.

He added: “Keiren has been outstanding and knows that he has to stay on top form because Chris is ready and waiting for that chance.

“I’m a big believer in competition for places and the goalkeepers are bringing out the best in each other right now.

“I want a strong bench and players fighting for a place all over the pitch.”
