The Owls posted a hard-fought point at Griffin Park on Tuesday in the goalless draw with Brentford.
Neither side could register on the night but the game certainly did not lack entertainment, talking points and chances.
Nevertheless, on a night that saw Brentford celebrate their 125th anniversary, a draw was probably the fair result in West London.
The hosts were quickly out of the blocks and had the ball in the Owls’ net after ten minutes, though to the relief of the visitors, the flag was raised.
Spanish attacking midfielder Jota cut inside dangerously from the left and squared for Andre Gray, who applied the finishing touch past Keiren Westwood, but from an offside position.
The early attacking impetus was firmly with the home side who were coming forward at will up to the midway point of the first half before Wednesday fired their own warning shot.
Chris Maguire took aim from distance and forced David Button into action with a fierce half volley.
That chance sparked the Owls into life as Tom Lees saw his measured effort cleared away from danger before Stevie May was denied by Button at his near post.
The Bees goalkeeper had to be on his toes again to block a firm Jeremy Helan drive, from which Kieran Lee struck the underside of the bar on the rebound.
At this point, the Owls were asking all the questions and Maguire’s wide delivery from a free kick almost unlocked the door, as May darted to the near post and flicked against the upright.
Just as the Bees started the first half on the front foot, they began the second as strong and created two early chances.
First skipper Jonathan Douglas saw his header cleared off the line by Liam Palmer before Jota drilled over the bar with the Owls stretched.
The game was well poised at the hour point, as both sides looked likely in the final third.
Maguire tested button from a wide free kick but the Bees keeper made good stop in the crowded area before Stuart Gray sent on Gary Madine to bolster the Owls’ attack.
But it was the Bees who almost had the final say as Jon Toral centred for Nick Proschwitz but the striker couldn’t connect at the back stick.
And the same man was dramatically denied in stoppage time by Westwood after receiving possession in the 18-yard box and as Lees made the clearance, the referee called time on the eventful capital clash.
