Wildsmith making waves

10 October 2014

Owls goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith was an unused substitute in the England Under-20s’ 1-0 win over Germany on Thursday.

The SWFC academy product was called up to the national squad ahead of the International Four Team Tournament.

A first half own goal by Niklas Sule sealed the win for England, who are next in action on Saturday against the Netherlands.

Meanwhile back on the domestic front, academy manager Dean Ramsdale has praised the young shot-stopper, who signed his first professional contract with Wednesday in November 2013.

He added: “Joe was outstanding last season and has played well this year so that has quite rightly caused some interest from England.

“We are delighted he has got an opportunity to show what he can do.

“It’s exciting news for Joe and the whole academy. It’s great for us when you see youngsters getting international recognition.

“Joe is a smashing lad and has got a great work ethic.”
