The Owls’ Under-18s were narrowly edged 1-0 out by Premiership side QPR at Middlewood Road.
Tyrell Mitford scored the only goal of the game to condemn Wednesday to defeat.
The hosts gave as good as they got against the R’s but couldn’t penetrate a resolute backline.
Coach Max Wragg said: “The lads battled throughout the game and showed great desire and determination to the last kick.
“We were a very young team, with seven first year scholars and two Under-16s.
“We created some great chances but we were just unlucky not to get something out of the game.”
