The Owls and Ipswich played out a 1-1 draw at Hillsborough on Tuesday night.
In a game largely devoid of clear cut chances, Atdhe Nuhiu and loanee Jonny Williams were on target as the spoils were shared.
Both sides were well placed in the Championship table and the incentive for Wednesday was to leapfrog their visitors into the top six.
And although they were the better side on the night, an Ipswich side buoyed by four straight wins kept the Owls at bay after Nuhiu struck inside five minutes.
Dean Gerken was tested when Chris Maguire flashed in a long drive the Ipswich keeper saved and Wednesday hit the front from the resulting corner.
Jacques Magohma’s flag kick was accurate at the near post and Nuhiu peeled away to direct a glancing header home.
II was just the start the Owls needed and they almost doubled the advantage on 24 minutes.
Maguire swung in a corner that Glenn Loovens headed goalwards only for Gerken to produce a fabulous diving save.
Kamil Zayatte nodded the rebound into the net but the strike was ruled out for an infringement – and that proved the last significant action for the centre half.
Zayatte pulled up in his own area with what appeared a hamstring injury and left the field to be replaced by debutant Claude Dielna just before the break.
And it might have been worse for the hosts ahead of half time when ex-Owls loanee Daryl Murphy headed Tyrone Mings’ centre a whisker wide.
Wednesday regrouped for the second period and had the ball in the net four minutes in, again through Nuhiu, but the linesman’s flag was raised for offside.
Maguire then curled an out-swinging volley just wide – before substitute Williams struck the equaliser on the hour against the run of play.
The midfielder – who only signed for Ipswich ahead of the game – picked up a loose ball just inside the penalty area and unleased a low drive that fizzed in off the far post.
It was harsh on the Owls, who responded with a Maguire shot from distance that was as close as Murphy’s effort in the first half.
Stevie May also went close as the clock ran down, so too did Christophe Berra at the other end, but both defences held firm to ensure a low-key contest ended all square.
