Derby delight for Under-18s

4 April 2015

  • Superb success for Under-18s
  • Dominant display by Wednesday
  • Goal of the Season contender for Penney

The Owls’ Under-18s posted a comprehensive derby success against Sheffield United on Saturday morning, beating their Steel City rivals 3-0.

A goal from Glenn Law and Matt Penney’s brace did the damage as Wednesday ran riot at Shirecliffe.

All three strikes came in the second half and the visitors were duly rewarded for a dominating display.

After his side asked most of the questions in the first half, Jonathan Fusco rattled the crossbar just after the resumption before Law’s in-swinging free kick went straight in to break the deadlock on the hour.

Then Penney took centre stage with two delightful goals to leave the hosts reeling.

First, on 70 minutes, the midfielder took possession on the right before cutting on to his favoured left foot to unleash a fierce drive from distance that doubled the lead.

Then, Penney delivered the coup de grace with ten minutes to go, picking up the ball 40 yards out and beating off three challenges to make it 3-0.

Owls: McDonagh, Foster, Stachini, Law, Murray, Beatson, Penney, Clarke, Hirst (Tracey), Ellam (Brown), Fusco
