Under-21s defeated in the derby

7 April 2015

The Owls Under-21s were defeated 3-0 by city rivals Sheffield United at Hillsborough on Tuesday afternoon.

Goals from Stefan Scougall, Joel Coustrain and Ben Davies sealed victory for the Blades, who brought an experienced squad to S6.

Wednesday, though, started brightly as Will De Havilland saw his header crash against the crossbar  before Blades ‘keeper George Willis denied Stevie May and Jacques Maghoma in quick succession.

United then got a foothold in the game and went ahead through Scougall’s volley and the Blades almost doubled their lead before the break but for a fine Cameron Dawson save from Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s header.

The visitors added to their lead fifteen minutes after the restart when Calvert-Lewis fed through for Coustrain, who rifled into the Kop net on the angle.

De Havilland came close to reducing the deficit in the closing stages but powered a firm header over the bar before United sealed the win in stoppage time, when Davies struck emphatically in off the post from a controversially awarded indirect free kick.

Dawson had collected the ball from Ed Sanders’ knee back to the keeper, but a back pass was given and Davies thumped into the net.

Owls: Dawson, Floro, Pickerill (Hirst 73), Sanders, De Havilland, Croasdale, Stobbs, McCabe, May, Meadows, Maghoma
