McGugan enjoys the moment

10 August 2015

But back to business immediately for Wednesday

Lewis McGugan says the Owls should enjoy the victory over Bristol City but insists the most important thing is the next game.

Following Wednesday’s opening day triumph over the Robins, the Owls are back at Hillsborough tomorrow against Mansfield in the Capital One Cup first round.

McGugan opened his account for the season on Saturday to double Wednesday’s advantage after Tom Lees had earlier put the Owls ahead.

He said: “We gave a good account of ourselves and it’s put us in a good position.

“There is a lot more work to be done. We’ve got to enjoy that win but we know there is a long season ahead and we have got to concentrate on the next game.

“We’ve got to enjoy it but we know the next game is going to require our full concentration and that is always the most important thing.”

The midfielder’s goal capped a hectic spell in the game on Saturday.

As the visitors threatened an equaliser, McGugan himself was on hand to clear off the line before surging upfield in the same passage of the play, to neatly finish from a Ross Wallace delivery.

It was a particularly pleasing moment for McGugan, who saw hard work on the training pitch come to fruition, as he explained:

“We’ve been working hard in training on our jobs at set pieces and guarding the back post in case the ball needs clearing.

“Luckily I was there and got the clearance and then it was just a case of trying to support Jeremy and making up as many numbers at the other end as possible.

“Ross put a great ball in and it fell to me and I put it away.”
