Owls exit FA Youth Cup

11 December 2015

The Owls Under-18s exited the FA Youth Cup on Friday afternoon against Swansea.

The third round tie, which took place at Llanelli Town’s Stebonheath Park, saw the Swans advance into the fourth round with a late strike from Daniel James the difference.

Wednesday began the game on the front foot as Matt Penney – who has a proven eye for the spectacular goal – went close with his free kick that flew just wide.

Warren Clarke and George Hirst both threatened before the half hour mark but fired over the bar as the Owls applied the early pressure.

Penney was almost the architect of the opening goal when his pinpoint free kick was nodded inches wide by Jake Nicholson before the break.

James blasted over the bar just after the interval for the hosts but had the biggest say in the contest with 14 minutes left on the clock.

The winger struck low past Brad McDonagh from the edge of the area to win a close-fought FA Youth Cup contest.

Owls: McDonagh, Conneh, Stachini, Kirby, O'Grady, Lee, Ceneteno, Clarke, Hirst, Penney, Nicholson

Substitutes: Duffy, Lonchar, Wallis, Price, Preston
