Owls scholar qualifies for National College team

7 December 2015

Aged just 16, Frank Koromo from the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme has successfully made the National College football team – an outstanding achievement for the youngster.

Frank, who studies on the Education Programme’s Elite Football Development course, has made the final 18 who will represent the country at college football level.

The college programme will provide Frank with a unique player development pathway to gain international playing experience and training in a professional setting.

He will take part in high quality training, regular fixtures and gain international playing experience, with his first session at the Manchester City Etihad campus on Saturday 12 December.

The Education Programme’s BTEC course gives youngsters the opportunity to ultimately progress to a professional playing contract. The course is facilitated through a new partnership between the Community Programme, Sheffield FC and Rotherham College.

The National Team programme is working in conjunction with sporting bodies AoC Sport and Future Elite Sport to provide elite sports students the chance to represent the country and their education programme.

Spencer Taylor, CSR Manager at Sheffield Wednesday, said: “This is an outstanding achievement for Frank and the Education Programme is thrilled for him to make it to the final selection. Frank is an excellent student and this is a massive opportunity for him to hopefully gain a professional contract when he finishes his course.”

Ken Merry, Associate Principal: Curriculum at Rotherham College, said: “Frank is a highly driven student and the place on the national team is well deserved. Well done Frank and good luck from everyone at Rotherham College.”

Frank has been sponsored by Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce and Saint Gobain and the college team are backed by Graham Plumber's Merchant, Bahco, Interserve and Arnold Clark.

The Education Programme is now recruiting for the 2016/17 academic year, with the prospective students’ open day held on Wednesday 13 January 2016.
