The Owls and Derby shared the spoils in the lunchtime kick-off on Sunday following a goalless draw at Hillsborough.
The Championship contest was far from dull, though, and particularly from the hosts’ perspective as they asked almost all the questions of the in-form team in the division.
The Rams arrived in S6 on the back of ten wins from 13 games but left having earned a point when another day might have seen the visitors draw a blank.
Wednesday were in charge from the outset, with Liam Palmer showed attacking intent down the right, hitting low towards Lucas Joao, whose outstretched foot just missed a connection from ten yards.
Ross Wallace went closer still just before the 20-minute mark, forcing a superb save from ex-Owl Lee Grant with a dipping volley from distance.
Next up was Barry Bannan firing in a long ranger that whizzed narrowly over the crossbar before Fernando Forestieri saw the same outcome from similar range.
Wednesday went on to dominate the opening period - forcing Derby deeper and deeper - and when half time arrived, it was the Midlanders that welcomed the whistle.
The Rams upped the ante from the resumption and Bradley Johnson headed a Jacob Butterfield free kick over on 48 minutes.
Chris Martin saw a set piece of his own deflected wide but that mini flurry only prompted the Owls to thrust forward themselves.
And on 55 minutes, Daniel Pudil was presented with a clear chance that flashed past the post with Grant beaten.
The Rams made a double substitution on the hour to stem the tide as they were forced on the back foot by a determined Owls performance missing only that final piece of the jigsaw.
Gary Hooper came on for the final 15 minutes but it was Wallace that almost stole the show, lashing inches over the top from all of 25 yards.
Then, with ten minutes to go, Derby came close to sealing a smash and grab. Awarded an indirect free kick inside the penalty area, Johnson unleashed a fierce drive that looked goal-bound but the ball crashed against the crossbar and looped back into the grateful arms of Keiren Westwood.
