Westwood aims to join ‘brothers’ at Euro 2016

18 December 2015

Plenty of football is left to be played in the Sky Bet Championship this season but one man who is hoping for an extended campaign is Keiren Westwood.

The Wednesday number one has spoken of his desire to be in the Republic of Ireland squad at next summer’s Euro 2016 finals in France.

“I’m massively proud to play for Ireland and massively proud to be called up,” he said.

“I love going away and meeting up with the lads, we are all real close.

“It doesn’t feel like team mates when we meet up and I’ve missed out on that because of the injuries which is a real shame.

“It’s been really frustrating and I’d love to be involved but that’s up to the manager.”

Ireland now know that they will face Belgium, Italy and Sweden in Group E.

A tough draw indeed but before then, Westwood’s aim is to put in performances for the Owls to force his way into contention.

He added: “I’ll play as much as I can until the end of the season and try to get in the manager’s thoughts to be in the final squad.

“As I say, when we all meet up, we’re not like team mates we’re like brothers and it’s great.

“If we keep that going up until and during the tournament, which we will do, then all the lads and the whole nation will be looking forward to it.”
