Sheffield Wednesday support women’s campaign against violence

11 February 2015

Sheffield Wednesday are supporting One Billion Rising, a community based organisation that is working to end violence against women and girls, and to fundraise for local women’s support services.

The group are holding a flash dance event this Saturday 14 February in Sheffield City Centre Peace Gardens, 12.30-1.30pm. All are welcome to enjoy the dance displays, drumming and recitals.

The day will end with a fundraising concert, from 7.30pm at Crookes Social Club with music, poetry and dancing to live bands. The club’s Community Programme is providing a replica shirt, and a match ticket for four people to auction at the concert.

The events are part of a global campaign to raise awareness of the many forms of gender-based violence. The Home Office estimate that in Sheffield more than 6,000 women and girls are victims of sexual assault and more than 12,000 are victims of stalking each year, of which most goes unreported.

South Yorkshire Police attend 1,000 domestic abuse incidents a month in Sheffield and 33,000 a year across South Yorkshire – the vast majority of victims are female.
