Local MP and lifelong Wednesdayite David Blunkett was at the heart of a fascinating feature recently on the new website 'You are the Ref.’
Blunkett was interviewed here at Hillsborough by Sheffield-based journalist Alan Biggs, who edits the popular site dedicated to refereeing.
Blind since birth, the former Home Secretary has never allowed that situation to compromise his love of football and he explained his reliance on local hospital radio, facilitated in S6 by Leon Rothman.
He said: “I follow games on hospital radio commentaries, which varies across clubs. Some have dedicated commentators and some use the online communication these days.
“We have Leon and his team at Hillsborough and I for one am very grateful because they are dedicated volunteers.
“It brings it to life for me and I always try to appreciate the position of the referees as well as the players. They are like politicians in many ways.
“I’ve sat in grounds all my life and heard expletives about referees and I’ve heard similar ones about politicians!”
