Sheffield Wednesday disability teams expand

13 January 2015

Thanks to new funding the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme will now be able to expand its disability football project, Ability Counts.

The Football Foundation’s ‘Grow the Game’ initiative has enabled for two new under 16s Ability Counts teams to be formed after awarding funding to the club’s Community Programme.

The two six-a-side teams will compete in the Sheffield and Hallamshire Under 16s Ability Counts League.

The league takes place bi-monthly and ensures disabled participants have the same opportunities as everyone else  to play football in an organised and fun environment.

Jake Duckenfield, the Sheffield Wednesday Football Community Coach who leads the project, said: “We have got a great bunch of lads who come together and really enjoy representing Sheffield Wednesday at fixtures.

“It’s fantastic for the boys and they really gain a lot out of being part of a team. Thanks to the funding we’re now able to offer more people the experience.”

Indoor training sessions take place on Saturday mornings at Hillsborough College at 11.15 - 12.15pm
