Yesterdays: Owls triumph in the Sheffield derby

22 January 2015

In the next instalment of ‘Yesterdays’ swfc.co.uk looks back on the Sheffield derby that took place at Hillsborough 21 years ago today.

On Saturday 22 January 1994, the Owls and Blades met in S6 for the second time during the Premier League campaign.

After a 1-1 draw at Bramall Lane in October 1993, anticipation was high ahead of the rematch.

The deadlock was broken after the break through Mark Bright and centre back Andy Pearce became an unlikely cult hero, heading home the second goal.

Gordon Watson put the game beyond doubt, though the Blades scored a late consolation goal with Dane Whitehouse on target from the spot three minutes from time.

The game was played in front of 34,959 and the win saw the Owls climb to seventh in the top flight.

Owls: Pressman, Coleman, Jones, Watson, Walker, Hyde, Sinton (Bart-Williams 85), Pearce, Bright, Palmer, Nilsson
