Wednesday youngsters defeat Portimonense 6-0

The Owls academy brushed aside Portuguese second tier outfit Portimonense on Sunday with an emphatic 6-0 scoreline.

The SWFC Under-18s and Under-21s are currently on tour in Portugal and the academy faced their first test at the weekend in a knock-out tournament format.

Wednesday will now face either Brentford or Portuguese side Olhanense in the final on Wednesday evening.

It proved a comfortable morning for the Wednesday youngsters, who dominated all the possession from the off and took a one-goal lead into the break through Jake Nicholson, who converted from a Jack Stobbs centre.

The floodgates opened after the break and Jordan Lonchar fired home an impressive hat-trick and first year scholar Fraser Preston scored twice as Wednesday eased their way into the final.

Academy coach Steven Haslam said: “It was an excellent performance in our first competitive match and one that will give the boys a lot of confidence for our first game of the season on 8 August.

“Ball retention was always going to be key in the high temperatures and I thought we quickly found our rhythm and passed the ball superbly.

“To score six goals and get a clean sheet is very pleasing and I was also impressed with the collective understanding and execution of the concepts and strategies we have worked on in the first three weeks of pre-season."

Owls: McDonagh, Brown (Conneh 75), Lee (O'Grady 75), Beatson, Triallist (Stachini 70), Kirby, Clarke (Price 60), Penney, Nicholson (Preston 60), Duffy (Lonchar 60), Stobbs
