Report: Ilkeston FC 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday

15 July 2015

The Owls continued on the pre-season trail with a 1-0 win at Evo-Stick Northern Premier League side Ilkeston FC on a summery evening in Derbyshire.

A second half strike from Marco Mathias settled matters as Wednesday chalked up their first success after reporting back for duty.

The visitors dictated the pace of the friendly fixture from the off, with Sam Hutchinson and Ryan Meadows firing warning shots from distance in the early exchanges.

The Owls settled into their stride as the first half wore on and came close to taking the lead just before the interval.

New recruit Vincent Sasso shaped to shoot in the box and sent a low effort towards the far corner only for Luke Shaw to clear off the line.

It was all change for Wednesday in the second half with a completely different side kicking off – and they struck six minutes in.

New signing Matias showed a neat turn of pace to advance on goal and play a give and go with another summer capture, Ross Wallace, before slamming home from close range.

Wallace then tried his luck with a curler from the edge of the area that Evandro Rachoni pushed over the crossbar before Sergiu Bus forced the keeper into a smart save after bearing down on goal.

The Owls maintained the pace in the closing stages, with Matias and Wallace standout performers.

But fitness was again the name of the game, with another box ticked ahead of Saturday’s trip to League Two outfit York.

Owls (first half): Price, Palmer, Sasso, Lees, Hutchinson, Dielna, Meadows, Semedo, Lavery, May (Croasdale 38), Nuhiu

(second half) Wildsmith, Vermijl, Lee (Croasdale 75), Lachman, Lees, Helan, Wallace, Melo, Matias, Lopez, Bus
