A tough start

17 June 2015

Owls defender Tom Lees is excited for the new campaign which will begin with a challenging home fixture against Bristol City.

The Robins eased to the League 1 title last term with an impressive 99 points and will begin their first season back at Championship level with a trip to Hillsborough.

Games with Ipswich (a) and Reading (h) follow before the Owls travel to Lees’ former club Leeds United and finish August with a home clash against last season’s play-off finalists Middlesbrough.

On the fixture list Lees said: “First of all I think everyone is pleased because we are starting at home.

“We’re back at Hillsborough early and we want to get off to a good start.

“It’s a tough game to begin with. Bristol City will come into this division full of confidence and they will want to prove they belong in the Championship after a brilliant season.

“We want to begin with three points and produce better performances at home. It’s important we put a marker down.”

Assessing the Championship this term, Lees believes the bar has risen in terms of quality and expects a tough season from the off.

He added: “We’re playing some strong teams early on that had promotion pushes last season, in Ipswich and Middlesbrough, but no games are easy and there will be teams that will surprise.

“We just need to get that consistency from the off.”
