Sheffield Wednesday have appointed Carlos Carvalhal as head coach and here at swfc.co.uk we profile the Portuguese, who brings a wealth of experience to S6 having led 14 teams in three countries.

Carvalhal, who boasts a reputation for free-flowing and entertaining football, has coached primarily in his homeland of Portugal, whilst also plying his trade in Greece and Turkey.

Previously, the central defender played for Braga, earning international recognition at Under-21 level with Portugal along the way.

The 49-year-old moved into management in 1998 with Portuguese outfit Espinho before switching across the country to firstly Freamunde and then Aves.

Next up was Leixoes and Carvalhal promtply became the first coach in Portugal to steer a third tier team into the UEFA Cup.

Leixoes then comfortably lifted the title the following campaign to earn instant promotion to Segunda Liga.

A second successive elevation followed with Vitoria Setubal, whom he guided into the Primeira Liga at the first time of asking.

Carvalhal then moved across Portugal for a 12-month stint with Belenenses before taking on the high profile head coach position at Braga.

The move to Braga was brief and he switched to fellow top-flight side Beira-Mar. Fresh investment into Beira-Mar saw Carvalhal return to Vitoria, where he promptly enjoyed his most productive year as a coach.

Vitoria finished sixth in the Primeira Liga and qualified for the UEFA Cup on the back of one of the best defensive records throughout Europe. Vitoria also lifted the Portuguese League Cup, beating Sporting Lisbon in the final.

Carvalhal then headed to Greek side Asteras Tripolis for a spell that preceded a move back to the Portuguese top flight with Maritimo.

Next came the opportunity to coach European giants Sporting Lisbon on an interim basis, which served as a platform to coach Turkish big hitters Besiktas having initially joined as assistant manager.

Carvalhal remained in Turkey leading Istanbul Basaksehir before taking up a technical director position at Al Ahli in the United Arab Emirates.

Carlos Carvalhal will be presented to the media at a Hillsborough press conference on Thursday 9 July.
