Report: Blackpool 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday

7 March 2015

  • Owls beat Blackpool 1-0
  • Three wins from four for Wednesday
  • Lewis McGugan settles contest

The Owls were back to winnings ways at Blackpool following the midweek blip against Blackburn.

Lewis McGugan’s second half set piece was the only goal of a stop-start game at Bloomfield Road.

In windy conditions and on an uneven surface, this Championship clash never promised a classic.

And so it proved through a largely uneventful clash, during which the goalkeepers were rarely troubled.

Play was scrappy, with both sides struggling to keep control of the ball but when they did, the Owls looked by far the more composed.

The visitors suffered a blow, though, on 18 minutes when Sam Hutchinson limped off - Marnick Vermijl slotted into the midfield berth vacated.

Wednesday went on to ask more of the questions and went close with an Atdhe Nuhiu header that sailed over the bar from a deep McGugan cross.

Chris Maguire and Will Keane had half chances comfortably dealt with before the Owls got the goal they deserved on 54 minutes.

The visitors won a free kick 30 yards out on the angle and the former Forest man delivered a wicked effort that flew straight into the far corner.

That gave Stuart Gray’s side the platform for victory and it was almost two on the hour when Nuhiu forced the first real save of the match from Ell Parish.

Wednesday went on to press Blackpool into their own half and looked the likelier to find the net but McGugan’s strike was enough to bring the points back to Sheffield.

Blackpool: Parish, Aldred, Perkins, Delfouneso, Addison, Oliver (Osayi-Samuel 59), Ferguson, Barkhulzen (Clarke 71), O’Hara, Hall, Telford

Owls: Westwood, Hutchinson (Vermijl 18), Palmer, Nuhiu, Maguire, Lees, Helan, Lee, Dielna, McGugan, Keane (Mattock 88)
