You never know what’s around the corner

18 November 2015

Thinking back to the summer months, Joe Wildsmith could not have envisaged the season he has enjoyed so far.

From making his SWFC debut in the Capital One Cup against Mansfield, keeping clean sheets against Premier League sides Newcastle and Arsenal, featuring for England Under-20s and receiving a call-up to the Under-21s.

It’s been a hectic few months for Joe!

The 19-year-old Owls academy product has just returned from his most recent spell with the England Under-21s and enjoyed every minute.

He said: “It was a great experience for me to go and train with the top young players.

“Gareth Southgate has been brilliant with me, I’ve integrated well with the group and it’s been great.

“To work alongside Eric Steele was a privilege, there’s been a lot of travelling and you can take a lot from that.

“Obviously the standard has been really high, as you would expect.

“Jordan Pickford has been in the fold and at that level for a while, so it’s good to see what to aim for and where you need to be.

“But we all work well off each other and it’s been a good week.”

Wildsmith has made six appearances for Wednesday in 2015/16 and he hopes to make many more in the future.

He continued: “It’s been a big season for me so far and I’m very proud of what’s been achieved and there are a lot of people to thank.

“The gaffer has been brilliant with me and Andy Rhodes has shown a lot of faith in me and I hope I’ve repaid them a little with my performances.

“Thinking back to before the season, I would not have thought I would have had the season I’ve had. It’s been incredible.

“But that’s football and you never know what’s around the corner. It shows when opportunities come, you have to grab them with both hands.”
